Other than a brief foray into the Pop! figure world, Gears of War has always been a third-person cover shooter. Across all six entries so far, players have come to expect Gears games to play a certain way. Slide into cover, pop up and blast the grubs. Despite this, Gears is a franchise with tons of potential in different genres, which is something Splash Damage hopes to take advantage of with Gears Tactics. Embracing the turned-based strategy genre, Splash Damage has created a new type of Gears SLG Game maps that aims to blend this genre with the franchise’s roots. Is Gear Tactics another excellent addition to the franchise or does it need more time at boot camp?

Tactics’ status as a prequel allows it to further flesh out the overarching Gears story. For example, fans of Gears 5 protagonist Kait Diaz get to discover her father’s origins. The story also serves to further flesh out the COG and Stranded’s relationship and explain why, even following Gears of War 3, things are so icy. Aside from fleshing out the Gears universe, Gears Tactics’ story stands on its own. Gabe and his companions have strong chemistry from start to finish, though it does take a while for their gruff personas to soften up. Though many of the revelations may not be that surprising to longtime fans of the franchise, there are enough twists and turns to keep players on their toes. Ukkon, Tactics’ main antagonist, may not be as physically intimidating as RAAM or Skorge, but he does pack more personality than them or any of the franchise’s other signature villains, besides Myrrah.

Though there are many ways to play the Scout, the class is somewhat unique in how all four of its specialization trees contribute to the making of an expert ambush predator. The skills come together to emphasize speed and stealth, amplifying the cloak while offering a treasure trove of ways to put the hurt on the Locusts. Some particular standouts that can be immensely useful for top tier smash-and-dash approaches are Escape Route, Demolition expert, and Anticipation. Escape Route is ideal for finishing blows that would otherwise be high risk - having cloak pop immediately after executing a downed enemy makes for a scout who can make a dynamic hit with little risk of retaliation. Demolition expert is the trapper's choice, allowing the Scout to plant grenades and proximity mines while remaining hidden. Plant bombs, duck out of dodge, take shots, watch the fireworks - easy money. Using Anticipation can allow these skills, and as many others as the imagination will allow, to be used in fatal unity. Starting the round with five moves allows for some truly complex strategies to be enacted, shifting the challenge from limited resources to the limit of the player's creativity, which is, of course, a great place to be. Gears Tactics rewinds the clock twelve years before the events of Gears of War and centers around a new squad led by Lt. Col. Gabriel Diaz. Sera is overrun with Locust and the threat is only deepening thanks to Ukkon, the Locust scientist responsible for creating monstrosities like the Brumak and Corpser. Out of options and with little time left, Diaz must raise an army of COG and Stranded to track down and assassinate Ukkon before he unleashes new terrors.

It seems simple, but not allowing "friendly fire" really helps keeps the game flowing. Soldiers can accidentally shoot their squad-mates in Gears Tactics ; this can end a mission instantly if one of the main characters is accidentally killed. It makes the XCOM games slightly less realistic, but it’s not an omission that particularly gives the feeling of being less realistic. Disallowing friendly fire makes soldiers on overwatch more reliable at providing cover.
